Natural or man-made slate?
Natural slate is split from stone, varies slightly from piece to piece and has a very long life. It's the traditional choice for Harrogate's older houses and often expected in conservation areas. Man-made slate is lighter, uniform and quicker to lay, and suits many modern homes and extensions. We'll talk through which fits your house, budget and any planning considerations.
Slating, course by course

Nail fatigue on older slate roofs
When slates start slipping one after another, the problem is usually the nails rather than the slate. Iron nails rust through over time, and each slate that drops lets water reach the battens. A handful can be refixed. Once it's widespread, stripping, re-battening and re-slating, reusing sound slates where possible, is the long-term fix.

Slate roofing: your questions
How long does a slate roof last?
Good natural slate can last a very long time; the nails, battens and underlay usually need renewing long before the slate itself wears out. Man-made slate has a shorter life than quality natural slate.
Can you match the slates on my existing roof?
We match size, colour and thickness as closely as possible, and salvaged slates can help blend repairs into an older roof.
Can you fit a roof window into a slate roof?
Yes. Roof windows are fitted with the correct flashing kit for slate, and the slates are cut and coursed around them. It's easiest to do during a re-slate, but it can be done on its own.
Why are there vents in the slates?
Slate vents let air move through the roof space, which helps prevent condensation building up under the roof, particularly with modern membranes and insulated lofts.
Is slate suitable for my extension?
Usually, if the roof pitch is steep enough for the slate chosen. Lower-pitched extensions may need a different covering. We'll check the pitch when we quote.
